2017 STAGE: PEOPLE: Planning for a stage presentation with heavy avatar load

Planning for a stage presentation with heavy avatar load
In preparing for a stage presentation of The Two Gentlemen of Verona Ada Radius of the Avatar Repertory Theater worked with Ilan Tochner, CEO of Kitely, to prepare the virtual space for handling a maximum number of avatars.  Here are the recommendations they developed.

Building the theater and set

  • The world itself should be optimized mesh. No moving parts - waving flags, spinning objects, etc.
  • Kayaker Magic can tell you how to have moving things that put no load on the server because all the action is on the client machine.
  • Make every surface phantom unless it must be solid.
  • Walking surfaces can often be phantom if they are on the ground.
  • Chairs can be phantom if the have sit scripts.
  • Phantoms are good for your virtual world.
  • Keep the number of textures to a minimum by reusing the same textures.
  • Same means having the same uuid.
  • Check all scripts and get rid of any you don't need.

Put the theater on its own world for the show

  • Probably the Kitely Premium plan is the best option for this arrangement.
  • But that is not currently available.
  • You can create a Kitely advanced world and be charged only for the remainder of the month.
  • If everything is yours or exportable, you can make an OAR for reuse later.

Have people arrive at lobby on a separate sim

  • The lobby should have all the textures used in the theater.
  • Be sure to use the same (same uuid) textures in both places.
  • Keep the people in the lobby till all the textures have rezzed for them.
  • You can encourage a wait by dressing the lobby in things to see and read.
  • That could be posters, notecards, web senders, and co-promotion materials.
  • Co-promotion: promotion of similar events to an interested audience.
  • Appropriate experts could be in the lobby to chat with guests and answer questions.
  • An actor in costume and in character could be especially effective.
  • Guests could pose with the actor for pictures--an NPC would serve for this.
  • Use a single walkin TP for transport to the theater.
  • Consider using a delay to make sure that arrivals are well spaced.
  • The walkin TP could vanish for 10 seconds before becoming available again.
  • Enclose the lobby and limit contents to items needed for the show.
  • Have a house manager at the theater to be sure people get seated promptly.
  • House manager should have power to eject people from the world

Monitor the statistics panel when people are coming

  • In Kitely the statistics panel appears on the world page (web) when the world is active.
  • Watch CPU usage when people come into the world.
  • If it crosses 80%, stop sending people until CPU usage goes down
