2016 HG: Planning for the future OS/HG. A discussion of HG security.

Planning for the future OS/HG.
A discussion of HG security.
The shift by MOSES to the Halcyon branch of OpenSim has major implications for hypergrid. A recent discussion in OpenSim Virtual helps to clarify the issues.  Here I summarise and comment on the issues, then provide a copy of the original content.

Summary

  • The military is seriously concerned about the security of the hypergrid.
  • Main military concern is "unauthenticated access to databases."
  • Grid operators and content creators may need to be concerned also.
  • Mike Dickson, in particular, is concerned.
  • The military has also had problems getting its patches accepted by core.
  • The main problem with acceptance is backward compatibility

2016 ART: The lost gardens of Apollo--Installation Art on the sim scale

The lost gardens of Apollo.
Installation Art on the sim scale
Some may remember: "The Lost Gardens of Apollo" once was a well known place in the virtual world of Second Life, built by Dane Zander. It was online from 2005 till 2011. Now there is an almost perfect rebuild by Delphi Bernard and approved by Dane himself. A place worth seeing for all who miss or missed the Original.  OpenSimWorld

2016 HG: Plans to support development of OpenSimulator/Hypergrid: Moses developments

Plans for development of OpenSimulator/Hypergrid:
Moses diverges from the OS Core.
The MOSES project announces new plans for its future, with a shift to the Halcyon branch of OpenSimulator.  The Halcyon branch is based on code newly released to open source by Inworldz.   The Halcyon branch may offer important advantages in the development process for OpenSim and some important disadvantages for the current users of OpenSim/Hypergrid..

What the Halcyon branch may offer

  • A roadmap for development.
  • "a professional systems engineering approach to planning a modernized OpenSimulator code base."
  • Funded development efforts from MOSES and Inworldz.
  • NVIDIA PhysX physics integration.
  • Browser-based viewer for OpenSim
  • Increased security

What the Halcyon branch may not offer

  • Backwards compatibility with previous versions of OpenSimulator.
  • A hypergrid-like functionality.
  • Easy way to get an instance running on your desktop.
  • Easy transfer  of scripts from the current OpenSim.

2016 ART: EDU: History month in Kitely, Pirate's Haven

History month in Kitely, Pirate's Haven
A whimsical and humorous presentation of an imaginary home base for pirates in the age of the tall ships.  Some of the work resembles the art of Arcadia Asylum (and may derive from it ).

2016 EDU: Librarians Share Virtual Communities as Resources--Valerie Hill

Librarians Share Virtual Communities as Resources
Invited post by Valerie Hill
Virtual worlds have libraries, of course.  Not virtual libraries, but real libraries of the future.   Virtual worlds, after all, live on the internet.  They have access to the the same huge store of information as does anyone connected to the internet.  But virtual worlds also connect people.  And when people of matching interests connect, they form communities.  Invited author Valerie Hill takes it from there.
Boston Public Library Reading (Wikipedia)
That was then

Librarians Share Virtual Communities as Resources

The word library conjures images of wooden tables, lovely lamps, hushed reverence and the smell of old books to those of us born before the Internet and the close of the Gutenberg Parenthesis. But what will the library of the future become now that we carry libraries in our pockets on mobile devices and now that we live in physical, virtual and augmented spaces?
-
Libraries now hold media in numerous formats:  physical books, artifacts, movies in various formats, ebooks and links to electronic databases.  In the near future, libraries may hold virtual reality headsets and collections of augmented reality applications.
-
Perhaps, an even more an important collection that libraries of the future (starting now) can curate is virtual communities.  Because we live in digital participatory networked culture, we can connect with people across the globe in virtual spaces.  Membership and participation in virtual communities can present challenges because there are so many:
questions:
  • How do you find the best communities of interest?
  • How can you build an authentic community and attract members who share common goals?
  • How can virtual communities interact and share information?

“She loves me, She loves me not…” This week at the Short Poetry workshop we’ll have some fun writing Romantic Knots - love poems where the first line is Romantic, but the second line is NOT. Let’s see how we can twist love into knots. So come down to the Short Poetry Library and join us to learn, write and share.

2016 PEOPLE: HG: New Media Arts plans to support the development of OpenSimulator/Hypergrid

New Media Arts plans to support
the development of OpenSimulator/Hypergrid
A discussion about the future of OpenSim (and hypergrid) software is emerging in the OpenSim community.  In this article, I gather some viewpoints and information.  I also cite some suggested future steps.
-
New Media Arts (NMA) interested in stimulating the development of OpenSimulator software.  NMA is a non-profit corporation in the US. It can receive (and account for) US Tax deductible donations.
-
I will lead the initial information-gathering effort, using OpenSim Virtual and this blog to gather, archive, and organize suggestions and suggested plans.  I will use this blog as the primary archive for now--G+ groups are not easy to search for past contents.
-
If you have organized information, recommendations, plans or the like, I would be interested in presenting that as an invited article on my blog.  Material on the blog can be found by Google search or by Search on Site (Chrome browser)--in the upper left corner of any page.

2016 HOBBIES: PEOPLE: Sailing the Seas of OpenSim. And ignoring the physics engine

Sailing the Seas of OpenSim.
And ignoring the physics engine
Vehicles have been a problem in OpenSim because OpenSim cannot use the (costly) Havoc physics engine.  And the physics engines available to OpenSim produce less than satisfactory results with vehicles.  Kayaker Magic has solved this problem, at least for sailing, by writing scripts that do not use the physics engine.  Here are some reports and videos of his products.

Kayaker Magic in his own words

Years ago I was reading posts by people moping about on the InWorldz forums saying they wished there was a way to make sailboats. They gave up because the physics engine was still under development back then and didn't do boats well. At the time I did not know a lot about sailing and didn't think I was the right person to write a sailing script.
But nobody else was even trying, so I got up to speed. I even took a sailing class in RL! I talked to a friend who is a retired naval engineer. Since the physics engine didn't do boats yet, I wrote a non-physical script to do sailing and got it working. And a big advantage of a non-physical script is that I could take it with me to OpenSim where it works no matter which physics engine you have.
